A producer (agent) is a person who is licensed and appointed to transact insurance business on behalf of an insurer. The relationship between the producer and the insurer is governed by the licensing and appointment process, which is separate from the relationship between the producer and the applicant or insured.
An independent agent represents multiple insurers and owns the expiration — meaning the independent agent, not the insurer, controls the renewal rights to the business written. This creates an ethical challenge: the independent agent must decide which of several available companies best serves the client's needs, rather than being limited to a single company's products.
An exclusive, captive, or career agent represents only one insurer (or a group of affiliated insurers) and does not own the expiration — the insurer retains the renewal rights. The advantage of this arrangement is deep product knowledge and strong company support; the disadvantage is that the agent cannot shop a client's coverage among competing insurers.
Direct response marketing sells insurance directly to the public through mass-marketing channels such as mail, print advertising, television, radio, or the internet, without the use of a personal producer. Direct response policies typically offer lower face amounts and lower premiums, and the potential client takes the initiative to respond to the advertisement rather than being solicited individually by an agent.
